AT&T Achieves $44 Million Energy Savings in 2010

AT&T has implemented 4,200 energy efficiency projects at AT&T (News - Alert) facilities in 2010 and as a result, the company has realized $44 million in annualized energy savings, AT&T has announced in a press release.

The AT&T corporate real estate managers received a comprehensive online energy management training program in 2010. Using 498 kWh per terabyte of data carried on their network, AT&T achieved a 23.8 percent decrease in energy intensity in 2009. As compared with 2009’s KWh per terabyte of data figure, AT&T set a goal to further reduce energy intensity by an additional 15 percent for 2010, the company stated.

By harnessing the scale of its network to deliver more sustainable solutions, AT&T connects people and businesses seamlessly, increasing efficiency, minimizing impact and strengthening the company’s connection to the world it shares.

“The roll out of the energy scorecard and energy training program were key factors which enabled AT&T to achieve these significant energy savings,” said John Schinter, AT&T’s director of energy. “We provided our employees with the needed tracking tools, training and incentives for them to be successful in their tremendous efforts to reduce AT&T’s energy use and realize significant cost savings,” added Schinter.

To grade energy performance at each of AT&T’s 500 top energy-consuming facilities, AT&T rolled out a comprehensive Energy Scorecard in 2009. Based on the real estate managers’ energy performance, the Scorecard tracks data, sets goals and actually awards scores. Also, to help leading companies shave operational costs and reduce emissions by identifying large-scale energy efficiency opportunities, AT&T participated in the EDF Climate Corps program, an initiative launched by Environmental Defense Fund in 2010.

In October 2008, the company worked with SunPower Corporation, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, CH2M HILL (News - Alert), and Morgan Stanley to install a 1-megawatt solar power system on AT&T’s facility at the Bishop Ranch office park in San Ramon. The system, scheduled for completion in late 2008, was partially funded by incentives provided by PG&E (News - Alert) under the California Solar Initiative (CSI).
