Mobily Selects Bio-Sourced SIMs by Gemalto

Gemalto, a provider of comprehensive range of digital security solutions, has announced that Mobily, a mobile communications operator from Saudi Arabia has selected its bio-sourced subscriber identification modules or ‘SIMs’, which have been manufactured from renewable material and are easily recyclable. Claiming a subscriber base with over 18 million connections, Mobily has made the first commercial deployment of this kind.

Catering to the needs of governments, wireless operators, banks and enterprises, the company offers a portfolio of secure personal devices including SIMs, universal integrated circuit cards or ‘UICC’ in mobile phones, smart banking cards, smart card access badges, electronic passports and USB tokens for online identity protection.

The new bio-sourced SIM developed by Gemalto (News - Alert) features totally compostable card body according to the certification by Organic Waste System, an external, independent laboratory; and also offers comprehensive compliance with the telecommunications standards. It will be helpful in providing high-standard technical properties along with cutting down the environmental impact as well. With the new cards, Mobily will be able to maintain its visual branding with colors and graphics of the highest quality level, without having to modify its logistics and warehouse processes.

Samer Aldameri, vice president of products and services at Mobily, said “Our goal is to contribute to the ecological friendly community, while enjoying the same usage experience.” Aldameri continued “We also wanted simplicity and convenience in terms of brand exposure and logistics. Gemalto’s bio-sourced SIM perfectly matches all of our needs.”

Philippe Vallée, executive vice president of Gemalto said “Mobily is always at the forefront of innovation and Gemalto is proud to support them in deploying yet another breakthrough new to the world product.” Vallée added “Going forward, Gemalto will continue to work closely with Mobily to rollout innovations that help them differentiate themselves in the market.”

In July 2010, Gemalto announced to enable its Trusted Services Management service to bring near-Field Communication apps in Thailand. The company had signed partnership agreements with Thailand’s second largest bank, KASIKORNBANK and Thailand’s telecommunications operator, Advanced Info Services to fulfill its aim.
