Electrovaya, a manufacturer of proprietary Lithium Ion SuperPolymer batteries, battery systems, and battery-related products, announced that it going to provide its 1.5MWh capacity Lithium Ion SuperPolymer Battery Energy Storage System for a major U.S. utility’s grid storage applications.
The company announced that it is partnering with ABB, a power and automation technology company with North American headquarters based in Cary, N.C., to provide the power conditioning and conversion equipment for the battery energy storage system.
The company explained that the Lithium Ion SuperPolymer battery technology is distinguished by two critical features such as: superior energy density results in smaller and lighter battery systems, and large-format prismatic cell design that enables large-system scale up.
Electrovaya said that around the world there is an unmet need to capture and store grid electricity for later use and as more renewable energy generation technologies, such as solar and wind, are implemented, they add a greater amount of intermittent and variable load to the electric grid capacity.
The company said its battery solutions can cater to the centralized storage needs at generation sites, particularly for renewable and distributed storage needs at multiple sites for uninterrupted power supply and improved power quality.
For the utility that is going to receive solutions from Electrovaya, energy storage with Lithium Ion batteries is a highly efficient way for storing energy from intermittent generating sources like wind and solar.
Sankar Das Gupta, CEO of Electrovaya asserted that working with major utilities represents a tremendous opportunity for Electrovaya in the rapidly growing grid energy storage market. It validates the importance of the company’s advanced battery technology and its unique clean, non-toxic manufacturing process.
Officials with ABB added that Electrovaya and ABB will be working closely together on this and other opportunities, as they meet the growing demand for clean energy via safe and reliable technology.
