Siemens Energy Deploys eMeter EnergyIP MDMS for Burbank Water and Power

Siemens Energy revealed that Burbank Water and Power (BWP), a provider of water and electricity to Burbank, Calif., residents and businesses, completed its installation of the eMeter EnergyIP meter data management system (MDMS).

In addition to software, Siemens (News - Alert) provided installation, configuration and commissioning services for this project. For Siemens and eMeter Corp, this is the first joint deployment of MDMS. Currently, the two companies are collaborating on six joint deployments.

Company officials said that the first phase of this project was a true meter-to-cash project. Within the MDMS, the meter reads are validated, estimated and edited, and then converted into billing determinants.

Saying that the initial implementation of eMeter EnergyIP was on time and on budget, Paul Camuti, president for Siemens Smart Grid Applications, said that the company’s rigorous project planning and skilled staff worked closely with the BWP implementation team to reach this important milestone.

BWP said that it was seeking a MDMS to support current and future applications and business processes enabled by advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), system monitoring and load control programs.

In addition to Siemens project management methodology, the MDMS offered a service-oriented architecture (SOA), allowing BWP to integrate the cutting-edge technologies, said company officials.

Calling MDMS a key piece in the foundation of their Smart Grid strategy, Joanne Fletcher, assistant general manager for customer service and marketing at BWP, said in a statement, “We forward to realizing the benefits of this deployment as smart grid technologies evolve and we are able to offer our customers more choices and more control over how they use their resources.”

Gary Bloom, CEO at eMeter, said that eMeter worked closely with Siemens to ensure a successful and timely deployment for BWP. He believes that eMeter EnergyIP will ultimately empower Burbank residents to make smart energy consumption decisions.

At present, Siemens is working with BWP on the next phase of their MDM project. The next phase includes the ability to respond to service requests, inquiries and interruptions quickly than what the current technology allows.

Earlier in October, Trilliant (News - Alert) and Siemens Energy announced product interoperability for integrating distribution automation solutions for utility customers.
