AMD Installs Coulomb Technologies' Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD (News - Alert)), a provider of hardware and software solutions for enhanced computing and graphics solutions, has installed three ChargePoint electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Austin “Lone Star” campus for employees. The stations were manufactured by Coulomb Technologies, a provider of electric vehicle charging systems and application services.

Coulomb Tecnologies has established an array of electric charging stations, named the ChargePoint Network that operates in 14 countries, while its network operations centers are located in the U.S., London and Hong Kong. The company offers a vehicle-charging infrastructure with an open system driver network, and its ChargePoint network provides multiple Web-based portals for hosts, fleet managers, drivers, and utilities. The ChargePoint networked charging stations offer various capabilities ranging from 120 volt to 240 volt AC charging and up to 500 volt DC charging.

After the recent installation, AMD aims at establishing additional EV charging stations at its Sunnyvale campus in spring next year, while Verdek, the exclusive distributor for Coulomb Technologies in the Southern States has supplied and installed the Austin ChargePoint stations of AMD. Leveraging the ChargePoint networked charging stations, AMD employees will be able to benefit from a sustainable and cost-effective commute option, which will also help in development of the EV market. AMD will be able to control access to authenticate users, and measure electricity usage right through the ChargePoint network itself.

“AMD is an established leader in environmental responsibility, from being a U.S. EPA Green Power Partner, to its LEED Gold certified campus in Austin to its international, award-winning Go Green commuter program,” commented Tim Mohin, director of corporate responsibility at AMD. “AMD’s EV charging stations will support the development of the electric vehicle market while providing another option for our employees to commute to work sustainably and give them the confidence they need to seriously consider an EV purchase.”

The ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations installed in Austin facilities of AMD are powered by 100-percent renewable energy, and can support six vehicles simultaneously. The stations have dual outputs delivering energy simultaneously from a 7.2 kW output delivering Level II or “208/240 VAC at 30 A” charging via the standard SAE J1772 connector and fixed 18-foot cable; and a 2 kW output delivering Level I or “120 VAC at 16 A” charging via a standard NEMA 5-20 receptacle.

“AMD is preparing for the future of transportation by welcoming infrastructure for electric vehicles,” said Richard Lowenthal, CEO at Coulomb. “We are proud to be a part of AMD’s efforts to reduce emissions, promote corporate responsibility and workplace charging.”

This month, Coulomb Technologies introduced the first ChargePoint Network charging station for electric plug-in vehicles that accepts MasterCard PayPass contactless payments located at Pier 27 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. This enables EV drivers in the Bay Area to pay for parking and charging their electric cars quickly and conveniently by simply tapping their PayPass-enabled MasterCard card on a PayPass-equipped reader, designed and developed by Uniform Industrial Corporation.
