Plug in Carolina Selects Eaton

Eaton Corporation has been selected by Plug In Carolina, a nonprofit organization, to supply and support a network of public electric vehicle re-fueling stations in eight South Carolina cities.

The company provides electrical components and systems for power quality, distribution and control, as well as hydraulics components, systems and services for industrial and mobile equipment.

To support the variety of new electric vehicles (EV) entering the roadways, the implementation of the charging network is underway. As Eaton (News - Alert) has the ability to meet the immediate needs of the project, it has been reassigned to the company, which was previously awarded to another firm. Featuring a family of charging stations with multi-port configuration, the project, which launched June 15, is funded by two state grants,

secured through the South Carolina Energy Office.

“This is a perfect opportunity for Eaton to demonstrate its commitment and capabilities to support the development of charging electrical infrastructures

that will assist Electric Vehicle drivers to confidently go about their daily business,” said Rich Stinson, president of Power Distribution Operations Americas for Eaton's Electrical Sector, in a press release. "We're eager to provide Eaton's comprehensive solutions to ensure that Plug In Carolina's public electric vehicle program continues to move forward.”

The stations will be deployed in Greenville, Spartanburg, Blythewood, Columbia, Charleston, Rock Hill, Union, and Myrtle Beach, at key re-fueling hubs in each city. At locations such as municipal parking garages, public streets and retailers, the program will provide publicly accessible EV charging stations. Also, to facilitate the monitoring and management of the state-wide network of chargers, the stations will be enabled for smart communications based on host city requirements.

In October 2009, the company announced that because of the popular demand of the Eaton 5130 uninterruptible power system, it is expanding the product line to include new 1000, 1500 and 2200 VA models. These line-interactive models are designed for protecting information technology systems and voice over Internet protocol and EDGE/3G/WiMAX (News - Alert) wireless networking equipment, against damaging power fluctuations and outages.
