PM's bid to win back heartland

Feb 25, 2013 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A number of federal seats in western Sydney are crucial to the Australian Government's chances of retaining power at the mid-September 2013 election. Prime Minister Julia Gillard will in early March spend five days campaigning in the area, including overnight stays at a hotel rather than a return to her official residence of Kirribilli House. While the Federal Government's main topics are job creation and education, Gillard must also engage with ethnic groups that have turned away from the Australian Labor Party in its traditional stronghold. The New South Wales branch of Labor has severe image problems, while support is also strong in western Sydney for Gillard predecessor Kevin Rudd.
