SAFS hosting special 'spa day'

WASHINGTON, Feb 01, 2013 (Washington Times-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Ladies 18 and older can enjoy a special "spa day" in Washington next Friday and be pampered free of charge.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior and Family Services building, 211 E. Main St. It will feature the SAFS Fitness For You facility, chair massages by Kim Bowling CMT and Smooth You Med Spa & Boutique, hot tea by Smooth You, hot paraffin hand dip, manicures, a scarf tying demonstration, booths and demonstrations by Mary Kay and Avon representatives, The Taylor'ed Look and by Tavi. There also will be refreshments and giveaways.

"Our goal is to highlight Fitness For You, but it's also a chance to be pampered in a spa-like environment," said Jill Cecil, SAFS executive director. "It's close to Valentine's Day. It's a good time to pamper women and show them what's available." She said giveaways will include food gift certificates, a by Tavi handbag and scarf, a pedicure at The Taylor'ed Look, a one-month Fitness For You membership and more.

"You don't need to be present to win," Cecil said.

The by Tavi scarves will also be for sale at Just For You Day for $10. An arm of the Center for Global Impact, by Tavi opens international markets to poor families in Cambodia. Products by Tavi are produced by women in Phnom Penh struggling with poverty. All profits from the sale of by Tavi products go back to Cambodia, with the women being paid wages, and remaining funds reinvested to expand the program and provide more employment opportunities.

The Fitness For You facility will be showcased, and Cecil hopes women will see what a great facility it is and join.

"It's only $20 a month," she said. "There's no joining fee. You pay for the month you come. There's no age limit, but the range is about 37 to 87 now." Cecil stressed that women need to make it a priority to delegate time for exercise and make it a part of life.

"It helps with blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis many things," she said.

"The health benefits are endless. Not only that, it boosts your mood." Phyllis Sharum uses the facility, which is for women only, and said she's made a lot of friends there and has some good laughs with them. Her doctor told her it's been so good for her she shouldn't stop.

"A lot of times people don't take the time," she said. "If they would, they would see how it helps. It helps with range of motion a lot." Fitness For You is a 30-minute circuit that works all the muscle groups, head to toe, according to Cecil. She said it can be adapted to individual fitness levels.

Instructor and fitness assistant Debbie Wilson said the program is doctor-approved and built for women. She said it helps with strengthening, balance and toning.

"There's no weight changing," Wilson said. "You use your own body resistance." Sue Allen, another instructor and fitness assistant, said several women have told her it helps simply with their ability to walk.

"I've had a lot of girls say if they haven't been in for a couple weeks they can really tell a difference," she said.

Nelda Ellis said she first used Fitness For You two years ago.

"I really was in pretty bad shape," she said. "I was not sure I could do it, but now I'm much better." Cecil said it's never too late to start exercising.

"Age is just a number," Wilson added. "It's what you do with it." Just For You Day will have an open-house format so ladies can stop by at their convenience between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., participate in whatever they wish, and leave when they're ready. Parking is available behind the building, as well as on Main Street.

Cecil said last year more than 100 women participated, and she hopes at least that many ' and more ' will participate this year.
