Christmas dinner again at Elks lodge

ASHLAND, Dec 21, 2012 (The Daily Independent - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- As long as there is an Ashland Elks Lodge, nobody will be forced to go hungry in Ashland on Christmas.

BPOE No. 350 will again welcome all in the community to share a holiday meal starting at 11 a.m. on Christmas Day.

"This is a tradition which began sometime in the 1960s and has continued ever since," said lodge spokesman Mike Piatt. "When the lodge began providing food on Christmas Day, it started with food baskets. Later, in the 1970s, we started serving meals in house. It has done so with our less fortunate friends and neighbors in mind, but has since grown to include shut-ins and those residents who just wish to enjoy a Christmas meal with others." Anyone who is unable to leave their home is asked to call the Elks at (606) 324-5720 between 8:30 and 10 a.m. Christmas morning for a delivery. "We ask those requesting delivery truly be shut in without any means for transportation," Piatt said. "Unfortunately we cannot deliver to motels, hotels, apartment complexes or nursing homes." The dinner is free and open to "anyone in the area wishing to come join us at the lodge," although donations are accepted and all volunteers are welcomed. Volunteers will make enough food to serve 1,200 to 1,400 meals, including an estimated 900 pounds of baked ham and 800 pounds of dressing along with green beans, yams, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls and desserts. Meals will be served at the lodge at 900 Carter Ave. from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and deliveries will be made between 10 a.m. and noon. For more information call (606) 324-5720.
