Gardening seminars are sprouting up all over.
Both Donzell's Flower and Garden Center and Dayton Nurseries are offering Saturday gardening series, starting next week. Here are the details.
Donzell's seminars
Donzell's seminars start at 11 a.m. at 937 E. Waterloo Road, Akron. The dates and topics are:
--Feb. 4, It All Starts With a Seed by Dan Dubnicka of Donzell's.
--Feb. 11, Growing Orchids in Your Home by the Akron Orchid Society.
--Feb. 18, Enjoy the Birds in Your Backyard by Joyce Pelz of the Akron Audubon Society.
--Feb. 25, Let Houseplants Make You Happy by Beth Minger of Donzell's.
--March 10, Creating a Fairy Garden by Duane Rollins of Donzell's.
--March 17, Bonsai Basics & Beyond by Dale Cochoy of the Akron Canton Bonsai Society.
--March 24, Home Grown Herbs by Barb Oare of Quail Hollow Herb Society.
--March 31, Backyard Vegetable Gardening by master gardener Lee Paulson.
The seminars are free, but reservations are required at 330-724-0550, ext. 110.
Dayton's seminars
Over at Dayton's, the seminars run from 11 a.m. to about 1 p.m. at 3459 Cleveland-Massillon Road, Norton. These are the dates and topics:
--Feb. 4, Ornamental Trees to Consider for the Home Landscape by Dayton's owner Tom Dayton.
--Feb. 11, Rock Gardening by Chuck Gleaves of Kingwood Center.
--Feb. 18, Gardening Trends by Cynthia Duckenbrod of Cleveland Botanical Garden.
--Feb. 25, Hummingbirds by amateur naturalist Carol Zeh.
--March 3, Introduction to Aquaponics by Paul Myers, a proponent of the food-growing system.
--March 10, Understanding Garden Maintenance by Michelle Riley of All About You Signature Landscape Design.
--March 17, Sneak Peek -- What's New for 2012? by Tom Dayton and Maggie Bell.
--March 24, Cooking With Herbs by Amanda Saunders of Kids in the Kitchen.

And if that's not enough education for you, the seminars at Dayton's will be followed each Saturday by free how-to talks at 1:30 p.m. by Michelle Riley of All About You Signature Landscape Design.

Edible gardening program
Yet another learning opportunity happens next Saturday, when Cleveland Botanical Garden presents its annual Sustainability Symposium. This year's topic is Eat Your Yard, a focus on edible landscaping.
The symposium, from 8 a.m. to noon, includes talks about the importance of nutrition and the benefits and challenges of incorporating edible plants into a landscape. It will be followed from 1 to 2:30 p.m. by The Dirt on Dirt Workshop, a program about the importance of healthy soil and how soil can be tested and improved.
