Monitors To Help Link Heartside Agencies
Jan 25, 2012 (WXMI-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- There's a plan to provide a network of video monitors throughout the Heartside Neighborhood in Grand Rapids to link up agencies that provide services for the needy.
Organizers are planning ten video screens to be installed in windows and other high-visibility areas at Heartside-area agencies.
Bruce Barresi is disabled and said he knows how to get what he needs in the area, but that it's sometimes confusing.
"I've been down here since 2001 and I still don't know a lot about the neighborhood," said Barresi.
So the Heartside Neighborhood Collaboration Project was formed. Bethlehem Church worked to bring the agencies together along with local government.
Soon they realized they didn't have a great way to disseminate information to their clientele.
"The problem is that if you put together a printed group of resources, by the time it goes to print, it's out of date," said Pastor Jay Schrimpf.
Schrimpf, along with directors of the other agencies, agreed on the plan. They're hoping to install them by mid spring.
"You can put all that information on a website, allow it to scroll, and put that information all over the Heartside and downtown neighborhoods very quickly and efficiently," said Schrimpf.
The hope is that a project like this helps free up personnel from these agencies who won't have to answer more questions or print out flyers.
The project costs nearly $17,000. The Downtown Development Authority already kicked in more than half. Schrimpf is hoping some donors step up and write a check for the rest of the cash they need.
