BRIEF: Police release image of Newport News purse snatching suspect

Feb 17, 2011 (Daily Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Police in Newport News have released an image from surveillance video of a man suspected of stealing a woman's purse in the parking lot of the Patrick Henry Mall.

The incident happened at 11:45 a.m. Sunday when an employee at the DTLR Store said she had her purse stolen in the parking lot as she was preparing to leave and make a scheduled deposit from the store. The suspect fled in a gold-colored Nissan Altima with 30-day license tags. He is described by police as a black male between 5-foot-8 and 5-11 with a skinny build. He was wearing glasses and a green hooded sweatshirt.

Police spokesman Harold Eley said "details are not visible" in the security video of the incident, but the department released an image of the suspect parking his vehicle in the lot. Eley said the video shows the man "repositioning several spaces away from the victim's vehicle." Anyone with information can call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
