BRIEF: Germantown woman wins Food Network Challenge

Mar 15, 2010 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Gail Churinetz of Germantown was the big winner on Sunday's "Ultimate Recipe Showdown" with Guy Fieri on the Food Network, taking home a big check for her Crawfish and Andouille Sausage Pizza.

She knew she won when the show was filmed in September, but had to keep it a secret.

When the judges were discussing their decision during the filming, Churinetz was in the green room and her husband, in the audience, was texting her. They expected Emily Hobbs, a contestant from Missouri, who competed last year, to win.

"I was convinced they were going to go with her," Churinetz said. "I was really shocked." Churinetz, an instructor at Viking Cooking School, received $25,000 in prize money and has $5,000 of Food Network merchandise headed her way. She doesn't know what it will be, just that it's kitchen equipment and supplies.

"It'll be like Christmas," she said.

She'd love to have her own cooking show, but for now, she's got a more modest goal: "I want to be a guest on the Neelys' show," referring to the show "Down Home with the Neelys." --Jennifer Biggs: 529-5223 To see more of The Commercial Appeal or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.commercialappeal.com.
