Winter day camp spots still open
Dec 10, 2009 (The Hawk Eye - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
As area schools release youth to the world for winter break, it often doesn't take long for boredom to set in.
To help battle those winter blues, Des Moines County Conservation has created three winter day camps at Starr's Cave Park and Preserve for children in kindergarten through fifth-grade.
There are a handful of spots left open for the camps, said Amanda Delperdang, the conservation department's environmental education and pubic relations coordinator.
Each camp will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and last two days. Children will be treated to both indoor and outdoor winter-theme educational activities, including games, crafts, stories and hikes.
There is a limit of 10 children per camp and a fee of $15 per child. A limited number of scholarships are available to those in need of financial assistance.
For children in kindergarten and first-grade, conservation will offer Snowbunny Camp, which will meet Dec. 21 and 22.
Second- and third-graders will chill at Winter Discovery Camp, which will take place Dec. 28 and 29.
Snow Trekkers Camp will cater to fourth- and fifth-graders and run Dec. 30 and 31.
"We do fun activities that are really interactive," Delperdang said. "Kids will learn about hibernation, and we'll go out and look for tracks in the snow, if there is snow."
