Calvert Partners Students to Participate in Emergency Distance Learning Day Through 'Electric Schoolbox'
BALTIMORE, Dec 01, 2009 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Calvert Partners schools to "test" emergency distance learning platform in Maryland and the Bahamas
It's not snowing in the Bahamas and the pandemic flu has not forced Maryland schools to close. On Friday, December 4th, Calvert Sixth Grade students at a private, public and an international school will simulate an emergency closing and participate in a test of a Distance Learning platform called Electric Schoolbox. Participating schools include Calvert School in Baltimore, Excel Academy in Riverdale, MD and Meridian School at Unicorn Village in Nassau, Bahamas.
Electric Schoolbox has been developed by Calvert School's subsidiary home-schooling and distance learning organization, Calvert Education Services. It is designed to enable public, private, and charter schools to continue to provide instruction in the event of an emergency school closing due to pandemic flu, natural disaster, or facility hazard.
Using Calvert provided, Web-based technology combined with a suite of embedded academic resources, teachers will provide lessons and monitor student progress through an online learning management system. Students will have access to Calvert's i-Library, Calvert Mastery Spelling Series and BrainPOP, as well as other online education tools. Calvert i-Library includes interactive resources, tools, and supplemental activities to enhance instruction including Web site reviews, age-appropriate activities, and an astronomy portal. Online versions of core reference materials like Encyclopedia Britannica, World Atlas, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Collegiate Thesaurus, and Multimedia Library are also included. The Calvert Mastery Spelling Series features spelling and vocabulary lessons. Writing activities are also included to encourage the student to use his or her spelling words in original compositions.
Teachers at all three participating schools have completed training in preparation for Distance Learning Day and the test of Electric Schoolbox. Each school has a unique academic program planned for the day that includes remote communication with students, LIVE online instruction, assignments and evaluations.
Calvert will launch Electric Schoolbox on January 2 and with the intention of introducing 21st century distance learning strategies and tools to traditional classrooms throughout the country.
