Derry man charged in pocketing of dropped wallet

LONDONDERRY, Nov 24, 2009 (The Eagle-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Matthew Lloyd, 25, of Derry has been charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly picking up a wallet dropped at a gas pump and pocketing it.

Robert Lebell told police he dropped his wallet at the pumps at the Route 102 Shell station on Oct. 28.

A station attendant checked surveillance footage and saw Lebell's wallet on the ground. About five minutes later, the video showed a green Ford Taurus pull up to the pumps and the driver getting out, picking up the wallet and pocketing it, police said.

The driver, later identified as Lloyd, then entered the Shell Food Mart and walked around before going to the cash register, police said.

The surveillance camera captured Lloyd at the counter.

After police ran the plates on the Taurus, it came back to Lloyd's father, who told police his son had the car that day, according to an affidavit.

Police got in touch with Lloyd, who told them he did take the wallet, but then got scared and threw it on the ground near the Bank of America ATM next to the Shell station, according to the affidavit.

When police told Lloyd the surveillance video did not show him throwing the wallet away, he admitted taking the wallet, but said he intended to return it to its rightful owner, police said.

Police told Lloyd to bring the wallet to the police station, which he did late on Oct. 28.

Police said Lloyd apologized when he returned the wallet, which had $500 in cash, credit cards and miscellaneous papers in it, according to police.

Police then had an arrest warrant issued, which was served last week.

Lloyd was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, Dec. 8.
