BRIEF: Recycled cell phones to benefit dog cancer research

Nov 23, 2009 (Sun Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- When Eileen Pike's two golden retrievers died of cancer this year, she was beside herself.

"They were like our children; they were in our wedding," Pike said. "We were devastated." Instead of sitting back, Pike created the South Florida chapter of the National Canine Cancer Foundation. The charity is dedicated to the research and treatment of canine cancer.

"I found one in three dogs will come down with some kind of cancer and 50 percent of those will die from it," she said.

The charity is starting a fundraising campaign, collecting working and non-working cell phones to raise money. The phones will be recycled at GRC Wireless Recycling in Miramar.

Pike said the charity is paid from 50 cents to $30 per phone, depending on the make and model.

LCI Construction of South Florida will collect phones at 933 S. Military Trail, E3, in West Palm Beach, and at job sites throughout South Florida. For information, call Robbyn Ackner at 561-578-5390, ext. 212.
