On TV: The best of American music

Nov 19, 2009 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The mighty of the music scene do what they do best this weekend on TV.

First, ABC has the "2009 American Music Awards" with the return of Whitney Houston, the first awards show appearance by Rihanna since "the incident" and a duet by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, just to drop a few names. The show, airing 7-10 p.m. Sunday on ABC, channel 8, airs live from Los Angeles and honors artists in the categories of pop/rock, country, rap/hip-hop, soul/R&B, alternative, adult contemporary, Latin and contemporary inspirational. The roster of performers also includes Oklahoma's Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez, the Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson and Adam Lambert.

"We're very excited about having Green Day, Rihanna, Shakira and Mary J. Blige all performing on one stage," said American Music Awards producer Larry Klein. "Each year we try to have a variety of artists and sounds, and I think these performers really showcase the depth of what this show brings to its fans." Then, go back to our musical past with the History Channel's new documentary, "The Beatles on Record." This film about the group's recording journey from 1962 to 1970 is narrated by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Sir George Martin. It features more than 60 songs, rarely seen footage, images from the Beatles' archives and outtakes of conversation from the original recording sessions.

It airs at 9 p.m. Wednesday on History, cable 55.

Dance-off They've danced. They've been injured. Some have whined. Most have not. They've powered on and, now, it's time for the season finale of "Dancing With the Stars." My best guess (due to deadlines, I'm writing this two days before the semifinals) is Mya and Dmitry, Kelly and Louis, and Donny and Kym will make the finals with Mya, a skilled dancer (remember the jailhouse dance scene in "Chicago"?) and her partner being named the winners. But, hey, it's anybody's guess.
