EAC To Formulate Law On Radiation Emissions

A new bill on radioactive material and equipment for the five EAC member states is being formulated. The Minister for East African Cooperation Dr. Diodorus Kamala stated this week in Arusha.
"With this new act in place all problems regarding radiation emissions, exposure and radioactive gadgets, including mobile phones, broadcasting towers and electricity cables will be effectively addressed," said Mr Kamala adding that the new law will also cater for importation and manufacturing of electro-magnet appliances in East Africa.
"Electromagnetic emissions come with advancing technology and since we cannot avoid the latter there is the need to take full control of the former to ensure safe usage and protect our citizens," added the minister.
He however did not clarify as when exactly is this new act expected to take effect.
Dr Kamala was speaking during the official opening of the second East African training course on Electromagnetic Field Exposure and Health" organized by the Arusha based Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission under the theme "Harmonizing electromagnetic Fields risks communication and electromagnetic field policy"
The two-day event held at Snow Crest hotel was meant to address and educate the Public on speculations and concern on the effects of electromagnetic field exposure especially exposure to mobile phones and their respective base stations and give the participants updates in the field.
The workshop aims at harmonizing the approach to risk communication on electromagnetic
fields which will lead to promulgating harmonized legislation in East African Countries.
The course was attended by around 30 participants from 6 African Countries and Seven European countries. Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) based in Njiro area, is a Regulatory and Service Parastatal Organization established under the Atomic Energy Act No. 7 of 2003, which became effective on 1st July 2004.
TAEC has been mandated to regulate research and supervise the use of Atomic Energy and Nuclear Technology so as to protect workers, patients, the public and the environment from harmful effects of both Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation.
Further to this TAEC has been mandated to co-ordinate and facilitate the promotion of Nuclear Technology and the safe and peaceful utilization of Atomic Energy.
