Former El Paso County Commissioner Miguel Solis dies in car crash, Felipa Solis injured

Jul 05, 2009 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Former El Paso County Commissioner Miguel Solis died in a car crash near Grand Junction, Colorado, and his wife, Felipa Solis, was injured, according to her mother, Rita Triana.

Felipa Solis, a former news anchor at cable Channel 9-KTSM and a contributing writer and columnist for the El Paso Times, is in surgery at St. Mary's Hospital & Medical Center in Grand Junction, her mother said.

The head-on collision occurred Sunday afternoon as the couple was traveling to the Denver Airport to return to El Paso after attending a wedding in the Grand Junction, Colo. area. The wedding was for the daughter of El Paso attorney Carl Green.

Katherin Berg Pettit, executive director of El Paso Pro Musica, talked to Felipa Solis right before her surgery at 3:27 p.m. Sunday.

"She sounded like she was in shock," Pettit said, who is a close friend of Felipa Solis. "I just told her, 'I love you. Hang in there.'" El Paso Times Editor Chris Lopez expressed his condolences Sunday night.

"Felipa is part of our family, and our heart goes out to her and her family," Lopez said. "This is a difficult loss for her. The two of them were a perfect complement to each other." Mark Ross, who has known Felipa Solis since 1998 when they both worked for cable Channel 9-KTSM, said he is saddened by the death of Miguel Solis.

"They were just a good couple together," Ross said. "He was the light of her life." Rita Triana, mother-in-law of Miguel Solis, said he was a brilliant, intelligent man, who worked himself from the projects of South El Paso to a respected, honest, decent lawyer.

"We admired him for the struggle he had and the person he had become," Triana said.

Mickey and Felipa Solis were married in 1989. Their son, Gabriel, 18, will be a sophomore in college this fall. Gabriel was not with the couple at the time of the crash.

In addition to being a lawyer, Miguel Solis was also a pharmacist and recently worked at the Albertsons pharmacy on Yarbrough. Miguel Solis had three children from a previous marriage.
