Solid Solar Panels from Gautam Polymers Provide Needed Power for Indian Market

One of India’s most pressing problems is its constant electricity shortage. A recent New York Times article cited India’s power shortfalls as a primary reason for contracting economic growth in the country.

Sowmya Industries supplies crucial parts for the construction industry in India. For three hours every day, the company loses power. On Wednesdays and Sundays, the company receives just enough to operate its lights. Electricity provisions are not sufficient to run its production machines.

“It’s very frustrating,” said R. Narasimha Murthy, Sowmya’s manager. “Power is a basic need. Everything is dependent on power.”

One solution to the problem may lie in Gautam Polymers’ new Solid Solar panels. The panels could provide much needed power to both Indian customers and the Indian grid. Plus, these panels don’t just sit on the rooftop; they are the rooftop.

“With the country's electricity grid accounting to a 30-percent loss in transmission and distribution, we at Solid Solar consider it criminal to waste this precious energy and pledge to reduce this through rooftop solar solutions,” said Gautam’s Solid Solar Director, Shubhra Mohanka.

“Helping in generating power on the roofs, Solid Sun-Shade Solutions not only reduce electricity bills, but also help to use the roof as an Open Air Café, Green meeting place etc. The Green rooftop on ones enterprise is an excellent way to become self-sustainable.”

The solar panels stand on steel supports, tilting to track the sun’s rays. This creates an open-air roofing solution as well as needed additional vertical space in a crowded country.

According to Mohanka, Gautam has entered into a contract with the company holding the highest number of patents in India. While Gautam did not name the company specifically, it did identify the company as a manufacturer of medical diagnostic kits. Mohanka says the solar panels will provide not only extra power for the factory, but extra shade for the roof of the building.

The panels produce 1.5 Lac units of power each year, which means they generate enough power to light 1,500 rural homes each year. The panels, according to Gautam, will also reduce greenhouse gases by 10,000 metric tons per year.

Customers who purchase the Solid Solar panels will receive a 30-percent government subsidy, according to a Gautam press release. Companies can also depreciate the investment 80 percent more quickly than the standard equipment depreciation.

For every 100 kW of rooftop solar panels installed, Gautam will provide a Solar Lantern charging station. In addition to lighting 50 households each in villages without electrical power, these lanterns could provide numerous employment opportunities and a boost to India’s flagging economy. The mini-grids produced by lanterns also light up 5,000 homes throughout rural areas to ease the demand on India’s struggling electrical grid.

Solid Solar could provide a much-needed power boost to companies like Sowmya Industries, while preventing the Indian economy from contracting for the third year in a row.
