GMP Reduces Carbon Footprint with its Installed Solar Panels

Green Mountain Power, an electric utility owned by Northern New England Energy Corporation, has more than succeeded in its attempt to have 10,000 solar panels installed in 1,000 days. In fact, it actually installed ‘more than 26,000 panels installed or approved for installation’ within its service territory.

“Our customers clearly want more solar, and we are determined to help provide it,” said Mary Powell, the company’s president and CEO, in a press release.

The company stated that during its 100-year-plus history, GMP has evolved considerably but its commitment and focus to meet the energy efficiency challenges with innovation and foresight has remained unchanged.

By supporting and promoting the state efficiency utility with energy efficiency programs, Powell said that its Vermont customers would benefit from the economic and environmental benefits that ensued. In addition it would promote the green economy, create jobs and enhance the state’s energy independence.

In-state solar generation plays an important role in the mix of renewable energy because of the increased demand for air-conditioners in summer.

In addition to solar, the company’s renewable generation sources include hydro, farm methane, wood, energy from landfill trash, and utility scale wind and this is borne out by the many GMP- owned solar projects and long term contracts that it has with its partners. It also has electric vehicle charging stations that are solar powered at the company’s Colchester offices and three public charging stations that generate electricity using solar energy.

The company’s SolarGMP initiative that pays customers six cents per kilowatt hour for all the solar energy they produce is an inducement to its customers to produce solar power. This would ensure that GMP doesn’t have to buy expensive power from other states.

“The more solar panels we have on line, the less electricity we have to buy from the New England regional market during peak times, which comes from expensive and higher carbon-emitting sources,” said Powell.

In other news, Green Mountain Power and Efficiency Vermont are partnering on an unprecedented effort to help every town in GMP service territory change over to more energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lights.
