IWLive, Version 3, Offers Water Distribution Staff 'Streaming,' Real-Time Controls

Broomfield, Colorado-based Innovyze, a company that develops software for smart water network management, has released V3.0 Generation of IWLive—which offers advanced forecasting and scenario evaluation for the water distribution system control room.

The release, which incorporates features requested by clients on three continents, has been tweaked to improve SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) connectivity, hydraulic modeling accuracy, and speed of implementation.

IWLive equips the control room with tools that are both predictive and reactive. It issues regularly updated warnings to alert the operator to system issues, predicting the severity of the problem and the time of onset in one easy-to-use interface. IWLive also enables the operator to evaluate problem-solving approaches—for example, by simulating closures of valves or a change in a pump’s operating schedule. It then quickly produces a second simulation that can be compared with the first to determine the level of improvement when a certain approach is implemented, the problems that remain, and the costs of the change. The fully optimized IWLive interface provides operators with a map of the entire water infrastructure, as well as background maps.

Color-coding highlights predicted problem areas; a single click produces a detailed map showing pipes, valves, pumps, reservoirs and other water assets. Animation of the map shows the development of the problem, while graphs show simulated pressures and reservoir levels. IWLive can be accessed remotely over a VPN, and can be configured to send critical warning messages via SMS or e-mail.New features in Version 3.0 include:

  • Expanded capability to read SCADA databases
  • Improved live control interpretation
  • Support for demand patterns
  • Automated results sharing
  • Improvements to isolation tracing
  • A streamlined implementation process

“IWLive allows utilities to make informed decisions in real-time by combining the power of advanced network modeling, SCADA, and operations experience in one control room platform,” said Innovyze president and CEO, Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D.

“With increasingly complex water distribution and supply systems, IWLive provides an affordable, easy-to-use solution tailored to the day-to-day needs of system operators.…At the same time, [it meets] the primary needs of utilities to better manage consumption and leakage; and improve system efficiency, comply with regulations, deliver a reliable supply of high-quality water in the most cost-effective manner, and avoid or eliminate the effects of negative events.”

IWLive V3.0 supports live data time offsets and SCADA value translations, enabling results and input parameters to be displayed in the time and units most familiar to operations staff. In addition, IWLive supports the creation of live controls directly from the SCADA system.

For customers who use the SCADA system to set pump or valve controls, IWLive can directly interpret those commands from the SCADA system and incorporate them into all simulation runs. Demand patterns allow IWLive users to set a variety of seven-day and 24-hour demand patterns for customers and different run types.

With increasingly complex water distribution systems, utilities are rapidly realizing the need to harness the power of hydraulic modeling in the control room. IWLive provides a solution tailored to the day-to-day needs of system operators, while at the same time meeting the primary needs of a utility to deliver a clean and reliable supply of water in the most cost-effective manner.
