VelaTel Global Communications, a wireless broadband telecommunications provider with offices in San Diego and Beijing, announced on July 25 that its subsidiary, VN Technologies, has completed an initial round of trials of its hydrogen fuel cell technology for China’s two leading telephone companies.

Tests were conducted at a site in Harbin for China Mobile, and at sites in Guangzhou and Beijing for China Telecom (News - Alert).

Both companies deploy thousands of telecommunications base transceivers, as well as other infrastructure that requires back-up power. China Mobile has submitted a comprehensive report about the test trial results to key ministries of China’s Central Government.

With 650 million subscribers, China Mobile (News - Alert) is the largest mobile telephone operator worldwide, and is the driving force behind the Global TD-LTE Initiative. Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE (News - Alert) ) is China's home-grown 4G mobile-telecommunications technology and standard – which has been co-developed since late 2007 by China Mobile, along with Datang Telecom, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia Siemens Networks (News - Alert), Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Qualcomm and a few others.

China Telecom is China's largest fixed line telephone company, and provides data, multimedia and other telecommunications and information services to more than 200 million subscribers.

"These test trials with China's two top telecommunications operators build confidence for the operators and for the Chinese Central Government to develop a standard to replace out-of-date back-up batteries with hydrogen fuel cell power,” predicted president Hongye Luo of VN Technologies. “I strongly believe the entire industry will shift towards green energy in the near future."

VelaTel also announced that China's Communications Standards Association has entrusted Luo to head the technical committee that will develop national standards and specifications for the use of hydrogen fuel cells in the telecommunication industry.

After adoption, these standards will be submitted to the Telecommunications Standards Sector of the International Telecommunication Union. Strong support from China Mobile and China Telecom positions VN Tech's product to become the "industry standard" for fuel cell systems in China.

Luo's leadership in developing standards and specifications also creates the prospect for VN Tech's fuel cell specifications to be adopted as the official "government standard" in China, and eventually worldwide.
