Now, building managers can make on-demand changes to manage energy and water systems across multiple facilities “in a heartbeat.”

On October 4, at the GreenBuild 2011 Expo in Toronto, Noveda Technologies launched its Building EKG energy and water saving application — the first in a series of mobile-based applications that manage renewable energy production, energy consumption, and water usage in real-time and will initially be available on Apple devices. Branchburg, New Jersey-based Noveda already is known as a leader in web-based, real-time energy and water monitoring.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, commercial buildings currently use more than 40 percent of the world’s energy, and produce roughly 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Noveda claims that use of its real-time energy and water monitoring solutions can slash energy and water consumption by an average of 15 percent. “We believe energy monitoring and management is an effective approach for driving energy savings and reducing the carbon footprint,” said Govi Rao, president and CEO of Noveda Technologies.

The Building EKG application is designed to help businesses access information anywhere and at any time, enabling key decision makers to make on-demand changes across multiple platforms and at multiple facilities, irrespective of location. This application combines the capabilities of Noveda's suite of monitoring solutions (EnergyFlow Monitor, SunFlow Monitor, and Carbon Footprint Monitor), giving an integrated view of all critical energy cost drivers, including electric, gas, steam, and oil, among others.

  • EnergyFlow Monitor helps organizations identify inefficiencies and waste in energy and water use in buildings. Customers can use a single dashboard to track and analyze relevant data and in turn, develop action plans to drive better usage and cost savings.
  • SunFlow Monitor provides real-time information on renewable energy production, which is normalized for actual solar irradiance—a measure of how much solar power a business is getting at its location— and helps businesses better utilize solar technologies.
  • Carbon Footprint Monitor displays a building’s carbon footprint (metric tons of carbon dioxide), volume of greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions avoided, and acreage of new trees that would have to be planted to sequester the facility’s annual Co2 emissions.

“With the launch of the Building EKG application, Noveda can deliver actionable intelligence on energy and water use not only instantaneously, but via multiple channels to our customers wherever they are located. This helps our customers to take immediate action to reduce their energy and water consumption and maximize renewable energy production,” said Joe Jacob, the company’s chief technology officer.

Jacob added, “Building EKG is the first in a suite of tablet PC and smart phone apps that we will be launching to enable our customers to save on energy and water bills, meet sustainability goals and stay ahead of competition and regulation. This new offering addresses the global movement towards mobile internet computing, mobile enterprises, and mobile workers. More and more, we see tablet devices being integrated as business tools and Noveda wants to be at the forefront of that shift with our clients.”

“Currently, we use Noveda's web-based monitoring solutions for all our solar PV plants that we have installed in New Jersey to meet our renewable goals,” said Al Matos, vice president of Renewables and Energy Solutions at the New Jersey’s largest utility, PSE&G.  “The Building EKG application will provide yet another way for our plant managers to get information on operational and maintenance issues, and react immediately, thus maximizing the renewable electricity output from our unmanned plants.”

At GreenBuild 2011 this week, Bayer MaterialScience LLC announced it will use energy monitoring solutions from Noveda Technologies to optimize the energy performance of its net-zero energy/emission EcoCommercial Building (ECB) projects around the world. Bayer will employ Noveda’s energy monitoring dashboard to visualize the energy performance of four existing ECB buildings, starting with the ECB Conference Center, located on Bayer’s North American headquarters campus in suburban Pittsburgh. The technology will then be rolled out at ECB buildings in Monheim, Germany; Greater Noida, India; and Diegem, Belgium. Noveda’s energy monitoring technology will also be utilized at future ECB buildings, including four buildings on Bayer’s Pittsburgh campus being renovated to boost their energy efficiency.

“Noveda’s intuitive and comprehensive energy monitoring solution is a valuable tool building owners can use to minimize energy costs while optimizing employee comfort and sustainability,” said Paul Platte, head, EcoCommercial Building in North America, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “This technology validates the tenets of the ECB initiative – that commercial buildings can be eco-friendly and economically viable. Noveda is a key addition to the ECB Network, further expanding the breadth of expertise ECB can offer to the sustainable building market.”
