Level 3 Communications (News - Alert), a global provider of fiber-based communications services, announced that its data center facilities in London and Amsterdam are powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

This is a significant step toward decreasing the company’s carbon footprint as part of its green initiatives. Level3's colocation facility in Amsterdam and two colocation facilities in London are utilizing 100 percent green energy for commercial power.

The company is relying solely on renewable energy for commercial power at three European data center facilities. Level 3 is committed to responsible and efficient operations.

“Our data centers house some of the most critical information, and it takes a lot of energy to ensure that information is properly stored, protected and accessible,” said James Heard, president of European Markets for Level 3, in a statement.

“Level 3 not only demonstrates our commitment to achieving excellence in its protection of the environment and sustainability, we also demonstrate our commitment to monitoring, assessing and implementing innovative technology,” Heard added.

Level 3 has received certifications from energy providers in both countries stating that the specified facilities now receive all commercial electric power from renewable energy sources, including wind power, hydroelectric power and solar power.

Recently, Level 3 Communications announced it is offering Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) Trunking with nomadic E-911 to integrate with Microsoft (News - Alert) Lync. Nomadic solutions are designed for enterprise workers who migrate workspace locations, taking advantage of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services that allow phone calls to be made anywhere Internet access is available.

Level 3's solution allows a user's location to be provided at the time of the emergency call, enabling routing to the appropriate first responders. Alternative nomadic 911 solutions, on the other hand, can only provide pre-registered locations.
