Major telecom service provider AT&T, which is focusing on its green initiatives, announced its compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles helped the company avoid the purchase of more than one million gallons of traditional petroleum fuel in 2010.

AT&T (News - Alert) shared this achievement as President Obama launched the Department of Energy's Clean Cities' National Clean Fleets Partnership. This U.S. government initiative is expected to help large fleets cut petroleum use by 2.5 billion gallons by 2020.

The service provider has been active in reducing its environmental impact and reducing its reliance on imported oil through alternative fuel vehicles (AFV). These AFVs include all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, along with the CNG vehicles.

“Avoiding the purchase of one million gallons of petroleum fuel is a significant milestone for AT&T in our quest to reduce our dependence on imported of oil,” said Jerome Webber, vice president of AT&T Global Fleet Operations, in a statement.

“Our investment in more fuel efficient vehicles helps minimize our impact on the environment, delivers bottom line benefits to our company and helps to spur job growth in the domestic clean energy sector,” Webber added.

As of now, AT&T has deployed over 3,500 AFVs, including more than 2,400 CNG vehicles in 543 cities in 35 states and the District of Columbia. AT&T has more than 73,500 vehicles.

AT&T had earlier said it is planning to spend up to $565 million to deploy 15,000 AFVs through 2018. Through 2013, AT&T expects to purchase around 8,000 CNG vehicles for $350 million.

Besides green initiatives, AT&T is also addressing the safety of their customer’s phones. The company recently announced the launch of the new AT&T Mobile Protection Pack, offering protection and service support for several mobile devices in AT&T's phone portfolio. The company is offering the new package at $9.99 a month.
